Skyping to France

Do you know which country's flag has the same colors as the U.S.A.? You guessed it... it's France. On March 29 , 2011 we skyped some of Cael's family in France (Europe). His cousin Juliana taught us information about France.

We learned French students start school at 8:30, go home at 11:30 for lunch, come back at 1:30 and go until 4:00; plus they don't have school on Wednesdays!

Tennis, soccer, and kite flying are the most popular sports in France.

Some foods in France are bread, soup, duck, rabbit, wine, and cheese.

Military time doesn't have pm and am. It only has hours that go to 24. So, in France, 8am would be 8am, but 1pm would be 13:00.

To see a movie in the USA costs about $9.00, and in France it costs about 6 euros.

The Eiffel Tower a gigantic sculpture in France. It cost about 1 million dollars to pay for it. It is located in a park called Champ de Mars. Our friend in France visited the Eiffel Tower. It is 984 feet tall or 300 meters. In France, most people use the metric system to measure objects.

In France, summer is warm, fall is cool, spring is warm and winter is warm too. The high temperature in winter would be mid-40s and the low would be low 30s.

Some French words are: Il n'y a pas de quoi, which means your welcome. Yes is oui and no is non.

Juliana visited the Palace of Versailles while she was visiting Paris. It is located in the small township of Versailles just outside of Paris. The Palace is between 520,00 square feet and 550,000 square feet.

Romanian Immigrant

Ce faci? - How are you? Bine, mult umesc!- Fine, thank you! A lady named Iuliana Hoben came to teach us these Romanian words and tell us about how she immigrated from Romania.

The capital of Romania is Bucharest. Northern Romania had a King named Dracula and his region was called Transylvania!

When Iuliana Hoben was a little girl she had to wear uniforms because her government was strict.Wars were often happening when she was a child. They didn't have video games and they only had one day of cartoons for only a hour!Isn't that weird?

Some more facts are that Romania had some food called sarmale. Fishing was often done in Romania. Leu is what their money was called. Some of the best gymnasts came from Romania.

The Symphony Orchestra

On Oct. 22, 2010 Carver third grade went to the Five Flags Theater to see the Symphony Orchestra. They had the cello, trombone, and many more instruments. There was a teenager who won an award for playing his flute. Cheryl and Mark Falb sponsored the symphony orchestra for us. All the songs were very good. Maestro Intrilligator was there, and he was the conductor. Some songs were Spider Man, Harry Potter, and Peter and the Wolf, and many more. It was a marvelous show!

The Amazing Band

On Monday, Oct. 11, 2010 at 10:30 something extraordinary happened. We went to Carver's gym and Switchback band came! They played pieces of music such as: smooth jazz, blues, country, etc. They played the mandolin and guitar. They were sponsored by the Dubuque Arts Council (DAC). We answered questions, and if we got them right we got a sticker. One person in our class got a sticker (Laney Herman). One song was the rhythm of rain. It was so good that it felt like a dream. The Switchback band concert was amazing.
